Murry Monroe Dickson was born in Tracy, Missouri, on August 21, 1916, the youngest of five children. His father, William, moved the family to Leavenworth, Kansas, when Murry was nine years old. That was his home for the rest of his life. When St. Louis Cardinals scout Jack Ryan signed him to a professional contract in 1936, he shaved a year off his age.
